Ellsworth Kelly first conceived Line Form Color in 1951 as a series of studies, both drawings and collages. Later that year he applied to the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation for a grant to produce a book, “an alphabet of plastic pictorial elements, but the application was not successful. With this volume, Kelly has brought Line Form Color to completion. Its forty plates correspond to the original collages.
The original drawings and collages were subsequently exhibited only in 1996 in the exhibition “Ellsworth Kelly : A Retrospective at the Solomon R. Guggenheim in New York.
Biography: Ellsworth Kelly (1923 – 2015) American Artist pioneered a distinctive style of abstraction based on real elements reduced to their essential forms. Contemplative and uncategorizable, his paintings, sculpture, and works on paper expanded all the possibilities .U.S. Postal Service Announces Ellsworth Kelly Stamps. Each of the ten stamps features a different painting or sculpture by the artist, including pivotal works such as Colors for a Large Wall (1951), Spectrum I (1953), and Blue Red Rocker (1963). The stamps will be released on May 31, 2019.
